BookMIFWash example doesn't work in FM 10

Hello!

I am trying to get the BookMIFWash example (available from C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\BookMIFWash) to work in FM 10, but I always get the following error message when I open FM:

"Cannot initialize API client C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\fminit\BookComponentMIFWash.dll.

Check for errors in the APIClients section of C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\maker.ini,verify that the client program exists, and make sure you have enough swap space to run the client."

As explained in the comments of the fm_bookmifwash.c file, I have followed the recommended steps :

  1. Copy the BookComponentMIFWash.dll to the fminit folder on my computer.
  2. In the [APIClients] section of the maker.ini file, add "MIFwash=Standard, MIF Wash, fminit\BookComponentMIFWash.dll, all".
  3. Open FrameMaker.

Does somebody have an idea of what's going on?

Thank you very much!

Nat

Show/Hide FrameMaker Toolbar with FDK10 API client

Hi,

I'veimplemented a custom FrameMaker ToolBar (as MyToolBar.xml file) with somepopular FM Menu commands contained.

And I’veassigned "kbd-shortcut" for MyToolBar  to "\!Vh" (Esc V h).

It worksfine. i.e. my Toolbar displays (or hides)  when I type the [Esc V h]  key sequence manually.

How should I execute this key sequence programmatically in FDK10 client with FrameMaker 10?

I tried tosolve this issue using F_ApiFcodes FDK function as follows:

I specified the following sequence of keys

...

static IntT fcodes[] = {'\\!','V','h'};

. . .

and then ran

F_ApiFcodes(sizeof(fcodes)/sizeof(IntT),fcodes);

. . .

However, I got “No expression selected in an equation” FrameMaker message and symbols"V" &"h" printed in the document.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Andrey

Hello,

Is there an offical plug in or tool to do this conversion easily? Using Frame Maker 9 I only see the options to export to PDF or XML. And I'm trying to maintain as much of the style/formatting as possible.

I'm looking to convert a couple of .FM or .book files so they are editable in Microsoft Word.

Thanks,

Why is "Save As Review PDF" Greyed Out?

I want to use PDF comment importing for my book in FM10.  However, "Save as review PDF" is greyed out on my menu:

Greyedout.png

I tried selecting different files, books, etc, and I couldn't figure out what was up.  So, I saved as a regular PDF and clicked "Generate PDF for review only" in the PDF setup menu, and had all kinds of problems.

Simplified English checker recommendations

I'm working with FramaMaker 10 (and Robohelp 9). We sell our software to an international market, many of whom don't have English as their first language, so for future releases we'd like to edit the most popular of our docs to use simplified technical English. Using it will also make it easier for our users to run text through machine translators and get good quality results, or for us to translate the docs more easily at some point in the future.

Can anyone recommend any grammar checker plugins, ideally for FrameMaker, but at a pinch for Acrobat Pro or RoboHelp.

A quick Google search has turned up:

MAXit Checker

Boeing Simplified Englsh Checker

HyperSTE

All of which seem to have FM plugins, but they're all pretty opaque about how much they cost without waking up the sales attack dogs. None of them seem to do any try before buy offers either (unlike the excellent 1 month trials for Adobe stuff!).

Anyone tried using any of the above, or others?

Saving a review PDF

Hi all,

I'm just getting into Extendscript for FM 12 so bear with me.

I have found the FM_Outputs_CondText file which does everything I need it to do except for I want the file to be saved as a review PDF. I've found the FCodes.KBD_SAVEASPDFREVIEW command and can get it to open the saveas dialog. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to interact with this. Any thoughts on how I can achieve the following process:

1: Apply conditional text show/hide (included in FM_Outputs_CondText)

2: Change output file name (depends on how I achieve step 3)

3: Save as review pdf

4: Move to next conditional text show/hide (included in FM_Outputs_CondText)

Any suggestions of what to do or where to look would be amazing.

(any FM scripter/user groups in Portland, OR?)

FrameMaker 8 crashing constantly

Been running FM v8 (unstructured interface) for a couple of weeks now (Windows XP), and it crashes at least 2 times every day. I can produce PDFs fine (with the highly publicized "fix"), but I'm getting all kinds of mysterious memory-related error messages. It seems to happen on Paste operations fairly often, and it seems to happen most often when I'm working in graphic frames. Not seeing much in the forums about FM8 blowing up, and I can't make heads or tails out of the error logs that FM is generating. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. FM8 is now costing me time and trouble, and I'm not impressed.

Benefits of Switching to FrameMaker?

$

Good Morning,

  I am looking for some guidance regarding the benefits of switching to FrameMaker as my company's documentation authoring tool.  Some brief background information: I work for a software company, and one of my roles is authoring and maintaining our product documentation.  Currently our documents (probably between 15 and 20 in all) are authored using Word.  There isn't anything too fancy or exotic about the documentation: a half dozen different styles are used, graphics are present (embedded as links), and occasionally a table is included.  I haven't had any major problems with Word, but it's always nice to see if there are better ways of doing things.  Since FrameMaker appears to be touted as the de facto standard for technical writing, I decided to check it out.  I've spent a week working with it and going through a number of online tutorials.

  After spending some time with FrameMaker, I can see some definite advantages.  If I was starting from scratch and could choose between Word and FrameMaker, I would probably go with FrameMaker.  However, the issue at hand is that I am not starting from scratch, and what I have been unable to gauge is whether the superior features in FrameMaker are enough to warrant the effort that it will take to convert the existing documentation.  I have looked over a couple of different online resources (including some discussions in this forum) to get a feel for the conversion process, and it looks to be extensive.  In taking one of my existing documents and running it through the process of cleaning it up in Word, importing it into FrameMaker, and then formatting it in FrameMaker, there has been some significant effort involved.  Granted, some of this is due to learning curve issues on my part.  But I don't have a good sense of how efficient the conversion process will become as I become better acquainted with the product.

  I would love to hear from people who have gone through the same process I have described.  Was it worth it in the end?  Have the benefits of FrameMaker been significant enough to justify the time and effort that goes into converting legacy documents?  Or was it honestly not worth it?  Like I said, from what I've seen so far, I can definitely see some value in using FrameMaker over Word - if I could snap my fingers and magically convert all my documents, I think I probably would.  But at the same time, I'm not unhappy with Word.  Based on my admittedly limited exposure to FrameMaker, I'm not sure I can justify making the switch.

  Thanks in advance.

FM 10 "Unusable Fonts"

Hello again everyone.

I have a book with multiple documents and the ToC needs updating. However, when I tried to update the ToC, it says that one of my documents uses "unusable fonts". Here's the thing, it's using Times New Roman. I have tried changing to another common font (Arial), changing back to Times New Roman, .mif washing, and creating a new book and importing the same documents. Nothing's worked. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is there a JS Script that could batch fm2mif and mif2fm?

FrameMaker 12 Publish Crash

$

Using Framemaker 12.0.1.331 all publish operations crash if the document contains a UserString of 1 or more characters in a table element.  We use UserStrings in this way to hold metadata about tables such as database keys and effective dates.

The Mif looks like this:  [We would normally have an xml fragment here but this is enough to produce a crash]

<Tbl

  <TblID 10>

<UserString `A'>

  <TblTag `Format A'>

  <TblFormat

Incidently a zero length UserString doesn't result in a crash.

Looks like a bug to me.

Saving Framemaker Book to a PDf

I am trying to save a book in Framemaker to a PDF file using "Save book As". The process runs to a point and then stops and gives me an error message. The message says "When you create a PostScript file you must rely on system fonts and use document fonts. Please go to the printer properties, "Adobe PDF settings" page and turn OFF the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts." I have tried this a million time with all sorts of variations and I cannot get the tool too create the pdf. I am using Windows 7 and Frame 7.2. I was running Windows XP up until 3 months ago and never had a prioblem. Now I cannot make any PDF files from Framemaker using the "Save book as" feature. Anybody have any advice?

Hey,

I'm trying to use keys as variables in my DITA project, but I can't figure out how to insert a "variable" in a topic using keys?

This is what my dita map looks like:

<map xmlns:ditaarch = "http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/">

     <title>Product variables</title>

          <keydef keys = "product_name">

               <topicmeta>

                    <keywords>

                             <keyword>Sample Product Name</keyword>

                    </keywords>

                  </topicmeta>

             </keydef>

</map>

This is what the topic looks like but nothing happens

<concept id = "id144FF0W0FFP"

    xmlns:ditaarch = "http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/">

<title>General description</title>

     <conbody>

          <p><keyword keyref = "product_name"></keyword> is a great product.</p>

     </conbody>

</concept>

Can anyone help me?

Why are the wrong paragraphs included when I do a Save As PDF

$

I'm using FrameMaker 12 and Acrobat Pro XI. When I do a 'Save As PDF' from a book and select the bookmarks I want, and arrange their hierarchy etc. Acrobat includes paragraphs formats that I did not select. For example, it seems to include a random selection of TOC entries, which I DID NOT select to be included.

I've gone back and double-checked that all paragraphs have the correct formats, but it keeps happening.

Also, once I've generated the PDF, the PDF settings I chose don't seem to save correctly. In other words, every time I do a 'Save as PDF' I have to select the paragraphs formats I want to include as bookmarks again; it seems to have saved some of them, but not all of them.

Any ideas?

"Unwrap" CDATA with XSLT

$

Hi,

I know this isn't necessarily a FrameMaker question, but it is a place where I know people. So forgive me for asking it here.

I have some CDATA sections in an XML file that contain markup that I want to be parsed eventually, and I want to be able to extract it with the markup intact. Can I do this with XSLT, or does the nature of CDATA negate the use of retrieving the markup with an XML-parser-dependent technology?

Here's a sample element (element tags replaced with curly braces)

{documentation}{![CDATA[{p}Some text{/p}]]}{/documentation}

Is there any way I can get that p element out of there with XSLT, without excaping any of the characters, so it is parsable markup in the output?

[{p}Some text{/p}

Thanks,
Russ
