I see that FrameMaker will provide vertical lines automatically in updated content when set up to track changes. It also will create TOC's and Indexes.
What I need is a way to also work with a List of Effective pages and Page Revision Numbers. I have been researching different programs for maintaining aviation manuals and this is a key area that I need to work out.
Any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.

My company wants our documentation to be accessible from a web page. No problem there. But they want to provide users with links that open the PDF files to a specific section.
My books are in FM10. I created hypertext named destinations (example hyperlink syntax: newlink alarm) at the points where they want to open the PDF. I then saved the book to PDF, with the Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs check box selected.
We are now trying to build a link from the web page to open the PDF at the named destination. Here is some info from the web developer on his syntax:

When I try to print to a .ps file I get the message:
"The selected PDF Job Option does not exist n the current installation. Either create this Job Option or select an available Job Option. Continue?"
Background:
Was using FrameMaker 7.2 previously. Recently bought Frame 11 (not an upgrade, full program) and installed it on a new machine that is running under Windows 7. I also bought and installed (didn't upgrade) Acrobat 11 after using Acrobat 7 for years on another machine. There are no previous versions of either app on my Windows 7 machines.
I copied two JobOption files from the old machine (Acrobat 7/Frame 7) to the new machine. They are stored in the same location where I found the preset JobOption files:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\Acrobat\Settings
In FrameMaker I went to File --> Print Setup and selected Adobe PDF as my default "printer". I set the Default Settings for that printer to the JobOptions file I want to use, which is one of the two I brought over from the other machine (in other words, my JobOptions appear in the list of settings from which to choose).
When I go to print the Book in Frame (Ctrl-P to open the Print Book dialog) I click PDF Setup and the correct PDF Job Options file is shown based on my Print Setup configuration. When I click Set though, I get the above message. I don't understand this message since I both see and can select my JobOptions files in FrameMaker and in Acrobat/Distiller.
I tried reading through the Adobe PDF Creation Settings document to confirm where the JobOptions files need to be stored, but the information I found doesn't seem to cover Windows 7 (named locations don't exist on my system, e.g., Documents and Settings folder).
Can someone clarify for me whether I can use my custom JobOption files from Frame 7 in Frame 11, and if so, where I need to place them? Also, any clarification of this situation in general and why I'd be getting this message when clearly Frame and Acrobat both "see" my JobOptions since they arein the drop-down list, is appreciated.
BTW - I also edited one of my JobOptions in Frame 11 and Saved As a new file but still get the same alert when I proceed.

EDIT: realizing that maybe I should have posted this in the Acrobat forum but since I am working from Frame and accessing settings via Frame, and getting a Frame errror, I started in this forum.
I'm currently checking if there is an easier way to automatically add <b> tags when changing font style to Bold in your xml. I'm not sure how to override the format of a structured application automatically in FM. Do I need to create a script for this? Or is there any configuration that can be made to make this work automatically?
I am using FrameMaker 10 now and want to use a Script that could save current opened files as mif or fm files (version could be selected).
Like all open mif files to fm10 version or all fm files saving to mif7.

This is a general ExtendScript question, but since I'm working with FM, I'll ask here first. I have a bit of a paradox here and I'm not sure of the best way to handle it.
I have a dialog box with a dropdown list, where I want to refresh certain controls when the user changes the selection in the list (dropdownList.onChange). This includes refreshing the contents of the list itself. However, the problem is, as soon as I try to refresh the list contents, it triggers onChange again. So, if I put the call to refresh the box within the onChange handler, it results in an endless loop, because my refresher function triggers onChange when it refreshes the list.
Does anyone know a better methodology, where I can safely trigger a refresh of a dropdown list within the list's own onChange event handler? I really wish that onChange was reserved for a user action only, or there was at least some property to that effect.

I had a lot of trouble downloading the free trial version of FrameMaker 9. The support portal is unable to help me. The problem is after I download the product, the status on the "Akamai Download Manager" displays the status as "Finished".(I did this twice.) But there is no '.exe' file on my desktop; which I was told by the technical support team, that ought to have been displayed. I have Windows Vista and use Internet Explorer. What should I do?

I have a book with multiple documents and the ToC needs updating. However, when I tried to update the ToC, it says that one of my documents uses "unusable fonts". Here's the thing, it's using Times New Roman. I have tried changing to another common font (Arial), changing back to Times New Roman, .mif washing, and creating a new book and importing the same documents. Nothing's worked. Any suggestions? Other information:
The .book file generates without error.
In PDF setup, I selected the Generate Tagged PDF option.
Patch installation is up to date.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
I have "fm" files produced in FrameMaker 7,8 I only need to read those files. Is anybody know of any method how to read them, not buying the tool itself?
I'm making three documents (books) in FrameMaker and then converting to PDF. The first two books generated to PDF with no "major" problems. There were a couple of glitches here and there but most were simply operator error. This forum solved two of my problems.
Now, with the third book, I can't generate the PDF and get error messages in the log file. I've gone back and triple checked everything and can't find a thing that's different between this last book and the first two. I've used the same templates and all of the paragraph formats and character formats are identical in all three documents.
I'm setting all of the PDF setup parameters the same. In the Adobe PDF setup, I've made certain that the "Rely on system fonts only..." check box is unchecked.
One of the error messages in the log file says,

This would make sense if Lucida Sans font were only used in this one book. But it's used in the first two books as well and they generate as PDF with no problems. In fact, just to make sure, I went back and generated one of the first books over again and it worked perfectly.
The only significant (?) difference in the third book is that it is much larger than the first two. It runs to 150 pages while the first two are 45 pages and 70 pages. But I've worked with books as large as 450 pages in the past.
I've been creating the PDF documents by the FM Save as PDF feature. But because of this problem, I downloaded and installed a trial version of Acrobat X. Then printed to PS file, opened with Acrobat and tried to distill. Got the same results and the same error messages.
My experience with FrameMaker and Adobe in general is that error messages and indicated results may be cryptic and sometimes have absolutely nothing to do with the actual problem. In any event, I'm totally snowed by this one. (I really shouldn't pick on Adobe for that. Microsoft is much worse when it comes to vague and cryptic error messages!)

We are going for upgrade of Frame maker 8 which is on unix system to FM 10 or 11. We are using Framemaker mainly for renditions, i.e to convert the fm documents to PDF. To convert fm document to PDF we are using the below mentioned command line utility available in FM 8.(on unix). /opt/app/frame8.0/bin/fmprint -i -p Sample.fm.fmtpl Sample.fm Currently the the fm file which need to converted to PDF and the FM 8(installed) are available on the same unix system ,so we were able to initiate/use the command line utility of FM 8. The rendition of the FM to PDF is On -Demand.( We are not running any batch activities/ bulk renditions).We are rendering the document as soon as the document is available.
Requirement:
As we are going to upgrade the FM to newer versions which would be installed on the Windows machine as Frame maker 10 or 11 will not support unix plat form, so can you please let us know which option is better to use i.e we want to convert fm file to PDF using java program without any manual intevention using publishing server/client version.
can any one help us as it is very urgent for us.

I'm converting some projects from Framemaker 9 to Framemaker 11 using Dita 1.1 and the composite template. Initially, I had set up to use Dita 1.2 using the ditabase tempate but am changing them based on advice from the forum Other than an error regarding an attribute that seemed to have been set for the dita tag in FM9 and not liked in FM11 DITA 1.1, all the files in all 3 projects converted fine to DITA 1.1 and the composite template -- except for 2 files.
For some reason when I try to open these two files in FM11 using DITA 1.1, FM crashes with the following error message:
Internal Error 11004, 23785796, 23786090, 26529493. FrameMaker has detected a serious problem and must quit. It generates a log file that means nothing to me.
I can still open these two files in an XML editor, in FrameMaker 9 and in FrameMaker 11 using DITA 1.2. and I don't see anything wrong with them. But since all the rest of the files in the projects are using DITA 1.1, I need these files to open in DITA 1.1 too.
Any ideas?

When I try to copy a section of another user's installation chapter, the entire document is selected. I only need a few paragraphs, not the whole thing. I have done this before with other documents without any difficulty. What is going wrong? Many thanks for your help.

In FM10. I was instructed to use a font called "gotham book" for my body text. I bought gotham-book.otf and gotham-book.ttf and put them in the FM folder FMINIT\Fonts. I have been using the font but the text looks off to me, horizontally stretched or something. I did a little research on the font and I see there are 3 names for what seem to be the same font, "Gotham Regular", "Gotham-Book" and "Gotham Book"; are any one of these three considered the official font while the other two are unofficial copies? Also, do I need both the otf and ttf files?

I've been looking for a style guide to use when documenting touch devices—a guide similar to the old Microsoft guide for the Windows UI. Our group has not been consistent documenting these applications or interactions. Some touch, some tap; some stretch, some expand. Googling hasn't helped: Android, Windows, and iOS documentation and applications aren't consistent among or within themselves, either. We're writing for applications on all these platforms.
If your company has developed or found a guide and you don't mind sharing it, I'd love to see it!
