problem with serial number

$

I just recently purchased and installed the Academic version of the Adobe Technical Communication Suite. However, when I went to enter my serial number after launching Frame 8 for the first time, I received a red X at the end and was told it was not a valid serial number. I used the one listed under "Technical Suite" on my box. I tried to enter it several times and even had a colleague try to no avail.

I tried to use the Adobe online chat and was told that the number was valid, but had not been "activated." I was confused as I thought that what I was doing in the Software Setup was activating the number. I am on a machine with internet access and administration permission. The entry fields only allow numerical entry, so I know I am not confusing 0 and O. The online chat rep told me I had to call Customer Service.

So far, my "customer service" experience has been very poor. I provided all my info and the serial number and was told I need to talk to Technical Support, they transferred me. The next person took all the same info and said that I needed to talk to customer service and transferred me back, but of course to a new rep. I was transferred back to Support Options again, then transferred into oblivion where no one answered for 40 minutes and then I was disconnected!!!

After reading some of these forum topics, I thought maybe I was having trouble because I have had RoboHelp in the past and still had an older version of Frame. I proceeded to deinstall anything related to Adobe, including the new suite. Then, after a restart, I tried to reinstall and tried again to enter my serial number only to get the exact same "not valid" message.

PLEASE HELP!! I have a fast approaching deadline and need to get this worked out.

FM File Comparison Utility -- Figure/Table Comparison Issue

$

0

Hello fellows,

The Framemaker file/book comparison utility seems to be a half-baked feature that is incapable of showing differences between 2 versions of a table/figure. Moreover, when a table is deleted, the CMP file does not clearly show that, unless you check the table anchor and see that it is conditionalized as Deleted. Unfortunately, the comparison utility has not been improved much in FM12.

Has any of you tried extending the capabilities of the comparison utility through scripting? AFAIK, the Extendscript compare() function parameters do not allow improving too much, so alternative ways should be used.

Thanks for your input in advance!

ANSI Z535.1 Safety Colors in Frame

Frame 7.1 Solaris (Frame 9 Win7 available).

Although the manuals I work on are print-published only in grayscale (600 dpi bitmap, actually), we make them available on the web as PDFs (which could be in color). At some point in the future, we may publish in color (probably using Xerox or HP laser engines).

For recent works, we've been using color, where convenient, and just leaving it enabled in the PDFs. For lack of a more compelling model, the color space chosen is sRGB. Those users exposed to color are most likely viewing the PDF on a computer, or printing it on their own inkjet or color laser printer.

A portion of the color content is graphic panels for DANGER/WARNING/CAUTION/NOTICE, and representation of product decals and labels of those same hazard classes.

The dominant market is U.S. domestic, so we follow ANSI standards for these admonishments. The ANSI standards include color specifications (ANSI Z535.1-2006) for safety notcies. The colors used in our manuals are only Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue at present.

Z535.1 specifies these colors in Munsell HVC and CIE 1931 xyY illuminant C coordinates. Most of the ANSI colors are out of gamut for sRGB.

The ANSI colors are realisable as printable spot colors on decals and product labels, but ANSI did not address how to render them in typical document printing. (Actually, the spec claims to provide Pantone equivalents, but does not.)

So, the spec colors can't be matched in normal printing from a random PDF viewer to a random color printer.

Well, we can at least pick something and be consistent, so the safety colors all have the same appearance within our documents, and perhaps match hue to safety spec.

Frame's color library, the Munsell Library of Colors or the Munsell High Chroma, has some of the Munsell values for ANSI patches, but they look awful, probably due to the [unspecified] choice of rendering intent in the mapping of library colors to the RGB/CMYK/HLS values actually used. And, of course, Frame has no color management to speak of, so the RGB/CMYK/HLS values are uncalibrated.

There may exist professional tables of Munsell/sRGB matchings (rit.edu's Munsell lab seems to have misplaced theirs during their web revamp), but this has a similar problem: what was the rendering intent during the mapping? Typically, conversions try to preserve some color difference between nearby out-of-gamut colors. I don't care about that. I want to get as close as possible to the ANSI colors in sRGB space, and I want to at least match hue (no "blue turns purple").

Any number of web sites purport to have RGB values for these colors, but they are even more vague about how they arrived at them, so they usually disagree from one site to the next.

There are lots of tools that perform CIE to sRGB conversions, but they are similarly challenged in the matter of intent (plus whether they accounted for the wandering of hue as you attempt to scale chroma in models other than Munsell).

What I probably need is the limiting sRGB value of the same hue as the Munsell value for the ANSI spec color.

Using BabelColor, I experimented with sRGB values until I could obtain:

* a match for the Hue

* a match (or a within-ANSI-tolerance) for Value.

* as close as possible for Chroma.

What I came up with is at the end of this post.

These colors will be entering the manuals as objects from Photoshop and Illustrator primarily, typically RGB EPS images, tagged as sRGB with embedded profiles. Some might be created in Frame directly, and as long as:

    "Tag Everything for Color Management"

with a working space of:
    sRGB IEC61966-2.1

is specified during Distiller, the resulting colors in PDF seem to match regardless of source.

What is everyone else doing about this?

Relationship between the two maker.ini files

$

I recently had my computer upgraded and no longer have local admin access, so I cannot edit the maker.ini file stored in FrameMaker's installation directory. I can edit the maker.ini stored in my account's directory structure.

I wanted to get FrameMaker to use the system cursor, which I have set to Windows Extra Large inverted. I edited my copy of maker.ini to add "UseSystemCursor = On". but it had no effect. Other changes I made in this file were accepted.

I looked at the maker.ini file in FrameMaker's directory and found that it had the line "UseSystemCursor=Off". I ended up having to get IT to change it for me and it works now.

But now I don't understand the relationship between the user's maker.ini and the one in FrameMaker's installation directory. I thought that the user's file would take priority and override any settings that were in the maker.ini file in FrameMaker's directory. This does not seem to be the case. I am afraid that other changes I may want to make may be ignored because they miight conflict with the rather extensive set of settings in the original maker.ini file.

Can anyone explain what the relationship between the two file is and why my change did not take effect?

Keith

Hyperlinked text--the text, not the link--disappears when I create a PDF from a book in FM 11

I am editing a FrameMaker 11 document with some text that is hyperlinked to a website. Earlier PDFs output fine. When I created the last PDF, some of the text disappeared in the PDF, but it's still visible in FM. On the PDF, the hyperlink is active in the blank space and it works to go to the website. Specifically the hyperlinked text is part numbers in a table with a shaded background--I mention this because if I open a page of the defective PDF in Illustrator--the text that has disappeared is behind the shaded square. Some of the hyperlinked part numbers are visible in the PDF--this seems almost random. It's not just part numbers or rows where I have edited something. I'm editing the document, I didn't create it. My background is InDesign and I am a novice in FrameMaker. Appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat 9

$

I had a FrameMaker file that has gone through several revisions. In its
last revision it accidentally had an older version of a pdf file created
on a Mac on one of the pages. The FrameMaker file distilled fine with
Acrobat 8 but had issues under Acrobat 9. The error was:

> %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
> %%[Page: 1]%%
> %%[Page: 2]%%
> %%[Page: 3]%%
> %%[ Error: undefinedresource; OffendingCommand: findresource; ErrorInfo: DictCRC --nostringval-- ]%%
>
> Stack:
> /CSA
> /1
> /CSA
> -mark-
> -save-
>
>
> %%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
> %%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

The pdf file seemed to be a nice pdf that Acrobat 9 (under Windows) had
no issues with. However, regenerating the pdf file seemed to cure the
issue and had the advantage that all the graphics on the page which was
a software demonstration now are showing the Windows application output
rather than the some Mac application and some Windows application output.

Alls well that ends well I suppose.

Failed to load configuration file

Hi,

I've been trying to install the trial version of FrameMaker 9 on Vista  Home Premium, but as soon as I start the installer, I get the following  error message:

error.png

I then get Select Setup Language dialog box, but the drop-down list is  empty. I do have a BootstrapperConfig.xml file in the Installer  Resources folder, and the installer does work on my XP machine. I  couldn't find any report of such an error anywhere. Note that, oddly, the XML file looks like a binary file...

Does anybody have an idea?

Thanks!

Is there any way to install Framemaker 9 without running the setup.exe? I am trying to install Framemaker 9 in our Citrix farm as this was the version we were informed which was supported under Citrix. The farm is running XenApp 5.0 on Windows 2008 64 bit. I have built three servers and two of them installed fine. The third has been causing me a lot of trouble. A clean build of Windows 2008 and I can run the setup. But as soon as I install the Terminal Services role I hit the listed error. I dont' understand what's causing it, using Process Monitor to look at what setup.exe is doing when it's failing isn't showing any issue. It's accessing and reading the file fine.

I can't run the MSI without going through setup.exe and I can't get setup.exe running. I have 5 other Citrix servers to rebuild but I don't want to start them until I get this sorted as all the applications are running properly on the servers with Windows 2003 32 bit and Presentation Server 4.

Where can I go, what can I do, what is that installer doing which is failing to read the bootstrapperconfig.xml file, can I install without using setup.exe. I'm running out of ideas I've rebuilt this server half a dozen times now trying to isolate the problem. I've even tried streaming Framemaker rather than installing and that's not working properly either. Issues with the licensing service.

thanks

Can a script execute another script?

$

Dear colleagues,

I am not talking about calling a function from another file for which I used the #include directive. I want to execute a .jsx that I know only at runtime.

Until now I have found this: If a script file contains

#target framemaker

it is possible to use File(lvFilename).execute() (without the target instruction the script would simply open in ESTK).

But: The execute() method triggers a warning that I should execute only scripts from trustworthy sources (or so…).

Is there any other method to execute other scripts? Or is there a way to make my scripts trustworthy?

I am unable to install the trial version of Acrobat that comes with the Technical Communication Suite. I have Windows 8.1. I've restarted my computer several times and disabled the virus protection but that did not solve the problem. I also tried running the acropro.msi several times but that did not work either. I get the following message:

What should I look for in a new computer system dedicated to FrameMaker?

I used to use FrameMaker many years ago. Now a friend is asking what kind of computer to get if she is interested in training in FrameMaker and using it professionally? I thought I would ask here, since I'm sure the situation is probably quite different than it was in the 1990s.

Can't save/write Framemaker files

$

Hi,

I've suddenly got a major problem - I can't Save or Save As any Framemaker files.

Specifically, I am using Framemaker 9 (latest patches) under Win XP/SP3, using parallels Desktop for Mac on my MacBook Pro 17" (8GB, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS 10.6.2).

I can save to my Windows virtual drive, but if I try to save to my Mac world, I get an error that says "The \\.psf\Home\<path>\<filename>.fm.DE1 that FrameMaker wrote may be damaged". There is a .lck file, but can't save the .fm file, even with another name.

I have tried saving in different formats (to check it's not a network/permissions issue). I can save in .html, .txt, .xml, .pdf, .rtf. I cannot save in any of the Frame-related formats (MIF, .fm, previous versions).

I suspect the problem arose after updating Parallels Desktop to the latest version. Dumb move. It barfed at the end of the upgrade, but I thought things were OK after restarting.

I also had a disk problem on my Mac (various catalog file errors) after ejecting a recaltitrant USB pen drive. Major headache. Again, thought it was all fixed after fsck and Disk Utility checks. maybe not. Still a weird issue though. I do seem to remember having something like this before. Anyone got any ideas?

Text inset and paragraph format

$

Why does FrameMaker change the paragraph format of the paragraph in which a text inset is anchored, when the inset is updated? I have an inset anchored in a Body paragraph with no other text in the paragraph. The settings for the inset are to reformat with the current document's settings. When I update the text inset, the paragraph format of the source paragraph changes to Heading1, or whatever the format of the first displayed paragraph in the text inset is. I don't understand how the paragraph format in the source document can change when the inset is updated, if the source formats are being applied to the inset. Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround? I'm at present using FrameMaker 7, but will be upgrading to FrameMaker 10 fairly soon.

3D interactivity from imported 3D PDF

$

Hi All,

I'm running FM 12.0.3.424 (TCS5) in Win7-SP1. We use SolidWorks for CAD drawings, and I have been inserting U3D drawings in my FM files to output in PDFs with 3D interactivity. However, SolidWorks 2015 no longer provides U3D output, and to my knowledge this is the only import that FM supports for interactivity. I can get a 3D PDF from SolidWorks, but how do I get the drawing OUT of the PDF as a U3D, so that I can import it to FM? Is it possible...?

Thanks,

Rene

FM10/Acrobat X 10-use named destinations for PDF linking

$
0
0

My company wants our documentation to be accessible from a web page. No problem there. But they want to provide users with links that open the PDF files to a specific section.

My books are in FM10. I created hypertext named destinations (example hyperlink syntax: newlink alarm) at the points where they want to open the PDF. I then saved the book to PDF, with the Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs check box selected.

We are now trying to build a link from the web page to open the PDF at the named destination. Here is some info from the web developer on his syntax:

These zoom but do not position you to the named destination:

     <a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#nameddest=alarm&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>

     <a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#alarm&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>

This positions to the indicated page and zooms:

     <a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#page=20&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>

What are we doing wrong? I've been searching the forums and community help and we've tried all the syntax examples we can find. Thanks so much for any help you can provide!
